The roots of the Atlanta Hawks can be traced from the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. Then, the franchise moved to St. Louis where they won their first and only NBA championship in 1958. Ten years after their title, they transferred to Atlanta where they have stayed since. The franchise can be regarded as a model of consistency from the early 80s until the late 90s for they have consistently made the post-season but without making it beyond the second round. During this time, the Hawks featured players such as Dominique Wilkins, Kevin Willis, Steve Smith, Mookie Blaylock, Spud Webb and Dikembe Mutombo.

At present, the quest to finally breeze to the Eastern Conference Finals is being continued by the likes of Josh Smith, Devin Harris, Jeff Teague and Al Horford.
