Florida State Seminoles
Florida State officially began competing in intercollegiate football in 1947. The sport was introduced to the university by Ed Williamson, the school's athletic director. After unexpected success throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, they achieved national prominence in the 1980s and 1990s under the guidance of Bobby Bowden. Florida State joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1992 after competing for many years as an independent program aside from a short membership in the Dixie Conference during the early years of the program. Florida State has won two national championships, including one BCS National Championship, along with sixteen conference titles and five division titles. The Seminoles have achieved two undefeated seasons and finished ranked in the top five of the AP Poll for 14 straight years from 1987 through 2000. The team has produced two Heisman Trophy winners: quarterback Charlie Ward in 1993 and quarterback Chris Weinke in 2000. The Biletnikoff Award, presented annually to the top receiver in college football, is named for Florida State hall of famer, Fred Biletnikoff. Other awards presented to Florida State players include the Walter Camp Award, the Maxwell Award, the Davey O'Brien Award, the Lombardi Award, the Dick Butkus Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Lou Groza Award, and the Bobby Bowden Award. Florida State coaches have been honored with the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award, the Walter Camp Coach of the Year Award, the Home Depot Coach of the Year Award, the Broyles Award, and the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award. The Florida State Seminoles have featured 36 players that have garnered consensus selection to the College Football All-America Team. Multiple players and coaches have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, and former Seminoles have gone on to have successful careers in the NFL. Longtime head coach Bobby Bowden, who has recorded more wins than any coach in Division I-A college football, retired following the Seminoles' win in the 2010 Gator Bowl following several mediocre seasons.
