In 2001, the then Vancouver Grizzlies transferred to Memphis, Tennessee. The team retained its name but their story has changed from perennial losers to improving winners. During the franchise's stay in Canada, they were constant cellar-dwellers. But their victories started to come by when they were able to acquire Pau Gasol via a draft day trade. They were able to make the play-offs for the first time in 2004 and went back the following year. The Grizzlies had some rough years before making it back into the post-season in 2010.
At present, another Gasol, Defensive Player of the Year awardee Marc, is anchoring the stingy defense that Memphis has been known for. Manning the frontcourt with him are bruising forward Zach Randolph and small forward Tayshaun Prince. Filling their backcourt are defensive specialist Tony Allen and point guard Mike Conley. The current Grizzlies roster also includes Darrell Arthur, Ed Davis, Jerryd Bayless and Quincy Pondexter. With their suffocating lockdown on opponents and a punishing attack in the paint, the claw of the Memphis Grizzlies can inflict damage to those in their way.
