The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees are a Junior A ice hockey playing in the North American Hockey League. The team is based in the Rio Grande Valley in Hidalgo, Texas, just south of McAllen, and play their home games at State Farm Arena. They were a member of the Central Hockey League, and two time Central Hockey League franchise of the year. Billy Newson, formerly of the Northeastern University Huskies, was the franchise's leader in goals, assists and points, while Ryan Shmyr - son of World Hockey Association All-Star defenseman Paul Shmyr - is the career leader in games played and penalty minutes.
On June 20, 2012, multiple sources confirmed that the Killer Bees will not play in the 2012-2013 season and a Junior hockey team from the North American Hockey League would replace them, was made official later that day. The Wenatchee Wild relocated to the Valley and retained the Killer Bees name.
