Carreira has had several hits since 1991, becoming during the 2000s one of the most renowned and best-selling popular singers in his home country. His most recent album, O Homem Que Sou, has been certified seven times platinum in Portugal. He has sold over 700,000 records in Portugal.

In August 2008, the Portuguese Society of Authors collected reports regarding possible cases of plagiarism against Tony Carreira. The references made to plagiarism related to three particular songs titled "Depois de Ti", "Ai Destino, Ai Destino" and "Leva-me ao Céu". SPA stated: "We have heard the songs and reached the conclusion that, there is one song, "Depois de Ti", which is an apparent copy without authorization.

Tony Carreira is the father of pop singers David Carreira and Mickael Carreira.
