The coolest game on ice started in 1917 in Montreal, Canada after its predecessor, the National Hockey Association, was stripped of its operations. From the four teams that it originally had, membership grew to the present 30 franchises. Before, majority of its players were from Canada and the United States. However, there has been a massive influx of European players in recent years that there are 20 countries which are represented by at least one active player.

NHL teams play 82 regular season games and rankings are based on a point system. A victory earns a team two points while a loss in overtime is worth one point. A team that loses in regulation do not get any points. Teams with higher point totals at the end of the regular season will be given higher seeding for the Stanley Cup playoffs. When a team reaches the playoffs, they have to win three, best-of-seven playoff series and the best-of-seven Stanley Cup finals to be declared as champions.

With the hockey puck travelling at a fast pace, you never know what might happen during a game. Goals can be scored with an interval of a few seconds while great goaltenders can just shut down the opposition any time. This intense action makes the NHL an exciting option if you are looking for sporting events to watch. Buy those game tickets now before they freeze out. You wouldn’t want to miss a defenseman slamming someone to the glass wall.
