While the Pittsburgh Steelers is now the benchmark of consistency in the National Football League, this wasn't the case during its early years. They had a 25-year run without making a playoff game and even had a winless season in 1944. However, that would change when Chuck Noll was hired as head coach in 1969. Through the draft, he built a dominant team that won four Super Bowls in the 1970s. Back then, the Steelers had stars like Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth and Mike Webster. On defense, the Steel Curtain was led by Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham and Mel Blount.
After 23 years as head coach, Noll was replaced by Bill Cowher who also had a successful 15-year run which is capped of by the Steelers' fifth Super Bowl. Cowher was succeeded by Mike Tomlin who has also won two Super Bowls with players like Ben Roethlisberger, Hines Ward, Mike Wallace, James Harrison, LaMarr Woodley and Troy Polamalu. The Steelers continue to be a contender every season thanks to their balanced approach on offense and defense. Thus, watching them live should be in sports fan's bucket list.
