Mercedes-Benz Superdome Sat., Dec. 20
11:00 a.m. ET ESPN
The NCAA-sanctioned New Orleans Bowl is a post season college football bowl game. It’s been played annually in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana beginning in 2001. The first New Orleans Bowl was sponsored by Wyndham Hotels & Resorts from 2002 - 2004. At that time it was officially called the Wyndham New Orleans Bowl. In 2006 R+L Carriers replaced Wyndham as the sponsor, and it then became officially known as the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
The New Orleans Bowl puts a team from the Sun Belt Conference against a team in the Mountain West Conference. The New Orleans Bowl originally hosted the Sun Belt champion when it was the only available bowl for that conference. But now that the Sun Belt has grown to three bowl games, the New Orleans Bowl has been assigned the first choice. If the Mountain West does not have enough bowl eligible teams which isn’t something that often occurs the bowl will choose an at large team. From 2002 to 2013, the New Orleans Bowl was affiliated with the Sun Belt and Conference USA.
The reigning champions of the New Orleans Bowl are the Louisiana/Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns. They beat Tulane 24-21 for their third straight victory in this bowl game. The AT&T Stadium, an NFL stadium in Arlington, Texas, was picked to host the first game in January 2015. The Champion of the game will be awarded a new championship trophy instead of the usual ”crystal football”. Which has been given since 1986 … the officials wanted a new trophy that was completely unique from the previous BCS championship system. The new College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy is going to be sponsored by Dr Pepper which bought the sponsorship rights through 2020.
